Construction is set to begin on a new flood defence scheme in Severn Stoke, Worcestershire, marking a significant step forward in protecting homes, infrastructure and the wider community from future flooding.

The project is being led by the Environment Agency in partnership with Worcestershire County Council, with delivery by Alun Griffiths Construction Ltd.

Backed by around £5 million of Environment Agency funding, alongside a further contribution from the council, the scheme is scheduled to start in late April and complete by Christmas 2026.

Severn Stoke has experienced repeated flooding from the River Severn in recent years, impacting homes, local businesses, community assets and key infrastructure including the A38.

The scheme will include:

  • a new flood defence embankment to the west of the village

  • upgraded drainage systems to manage surface water

  • a raised section of road at Ham Lane to improve resilience during flood events

Initial materials are already being delivered to site, with further works progressing over the coming months.

The project forms part of a wider national programme to strengthen flood resilience, with significant investment being made into both new and existing defences across England.

Once complete, the scheme will provide long-term protection and greater confidence for the local community, while supporting the ongoing resilience of key infrastructure in the area.
