NATIONAL GRID AWARDS £1.2BN OF TRANSMISSION UPGRADE WORKS TO FIVE DELIVERY PARTNERS

National Grid has appointed five delivery partners to deliver the next phase of its Electricity Transmission Partnership (ETP), allocating an initial £1.2bn programme of overhead line upgrade works across England and Wales.

Balfour Beatty, M Group, Morgan Sindall Infrastructure, Murphy and OTW have secured places on the programme, which will focus on upgrading more than 1,000km of existing transmission routes through major reconductoring works.

The appointments form part of National Grid’s long-term strategy to modernise and strengthen the UK’s electricity transmission network as demand for power infrastructure continues to grow.

Project Overview

📍 England & Wales

👤 Client: National Grid

💰 Initial Programme Value: £1.2bn

⚡ Programme: Electricity Transmission Partnership (ETP)

📏 Over 1,000km of Transmission Routes

🏢 Sector: Energy Infrastructure

Successful Delivery Partners

• Balfour Beatty

• M Group

• Morgan Sindall Infrastructure

• Murphy

• OTW

Scope of Works

The programme will focus on reconductoring existing overhead transmission lines.

Reconductoring involves replacing existing conductors with higher-capacity materials, enabling transmission lines to carry greater volumes of electricity while making use of existing infrastructure corridors.

The approach allows National Grid to increase network capacity efficiently while supporting the UK’s wider energy transition objectives.

ConstructNet Supply Chain Analysis

The programme is expected to generate significant opportunities throughout the energy and infrastructure supply chain.

Potential opportunities may include:

• Overhead line contractors

• Civil engineering specialists

• Foundations and access contractors

• Traffic management providers

• Steel fabrication suppliers

• Plant and equipment hire companies

• Environmental and ecological consultants

• Surveying and engineering services

• Cable and electrical infrastructure suppliers

• Logistics and transport providers

• Temporary works specialists

• Health and safety consultants

Given the scale of the programme and its geographic reach, subcontracting and supplier opportunities are expected to emerge across multiple regions throughout England and Wales.

ConstructNet Intelligence

The latest ETP appointments form part of National Grid’s wider RIIO-T3 investment programme, which proposes approximately £31bn of investment in the transmission network through to 2031.

Over that period, National Grid plans to upgrade around 3,500km of existing transmission lines, representing approximately half of its current network.

The programme represents one of the most significant infrastructure investment pipelines currently active within the UK energy sector and is expected to support long-term opportunities across civil engineering, utilities, electrical infrastructure and specialist energy supply chains.
