Robertson Construction North West has introduced a UK-first inflatable roofing solution as part of the £38m redevelopment of Royal Bolton Hospital.

The innovative system has been installed while the hospital remains fully operational, enabling critical works to be carried out safely, efficiently, and with minimal disruption.

Innovative Roofing Solution

At the heart of the project is a 35-metre air-filled modular tent system, engineered to be deployed directly on the hospital roof.

  • Fully weatherproof working environment

  • Inflated using a constant airflow system

  • Powered by carbon-free mains electricity

  • Rapid deployment – installed in 7 minutes, removed in 3

The system marks the first use of this technology in UK construction roofing by a Tier 1 contractor.

Supporting Critical Hospital Operations

The works form part of a major programme to replace RAAC roofing across the hospital’s maternity unit, alongside upgrades to mechanical and electrical systems.

Traditional scaffolding presented major challenges due to:

  • Complex roof layout

  • Interconnected buildings

  • Need for 24/7 access to essential services

By adopting a lightweight, modular approach, the project team has maintained programme certainty while ensuring patient safety, privacy, and operational continuity.

Programme and Delivery

  • 13 modular tents to be used across the scheme

  • 40-week programme for roof replacement

  • Integrated access points to improve logistics and safety

The system has been supplied by Njordair, with Robertson developing bespoke adaptations through a detailed temporary works design process.

Wider Project Team

The scheme is being delivered for Bolton NHS Foundation Trust, with WeBuild Healthcare appointed as main contractor via the Crown Commercial Service ProCure23 framework.

Industry Impact

The approach demonstrates how modern methods and innovative thinking can transform the delivery of complex refurbishment projects—particularly in live healthcare environments where disruption must be minimised.
