Planning approved for Crystal Palace National Sports Centre redevelopment

Planning approval has been granted for the redevelopment of the Crystal Palace National Sports Centre, paving the way for a major refurbishment of one of the UK’s most iconic sporting venues.

The project, which is expected to begin on site in late 2026, will modernise the Grade II* listed complex while preserving its historic character and improving accessibility, sustainability and sporting facilities.

Procured through the Southern Construction Framework, Morgan Sindall Construction has been appointed as the main contractor for the refurbishment.

The redevelopment will see the return of both the 50-metre swimming pool and diving pool within a redesigned aquatics hall, alongside a refurbished indoor athletics zone, expanded gym, specialist weightlifting facility and climbing centre.

New outdoor facilities will include padel courts, 3x3 basketball courts, five-a-side football pitches, a multi-sports pitch and enhanced public spaces, while the stadium will also be refurbished with accessible seating introduced for the first time.

Sustainability is a key focus of the scheme, with the design targeting a 98% reduction in carbon emissions through energy efficiency upgrades, photovoltaic panels and air source heat pumps.

The project has also delivered a range of community benefits ahead of construction, including education programmes, apprenticeships, work placements and investment in local training initiatives.
