Kier secures £51m Severn Trent wastewater upgrade contracts

Kier has been awarded more than £51m of contracts by Severn Trent to deliver upgrades at three wastewater treatment works as part of the water company’s AMP8 investment programme.

The projects, located in Droitwich, Warton and Worksop, will improve treatment performance, increase network resilience and help Severn Trent meet tighter environmental standards and future capacity requirements.

The contracts form part of the wider Asset Management Period 8 (AMP8) investment programme, which is driving significant investment across the UK’s water infrastructure sector.

At Droitwich Sewage Treatment Works, Kier will deliver a £11.7m scheme to improve phosphorus removal. The works include tertiary solids removal, chemical dosing, aeration upgrades and wider process improvements to enable the site to meet tighter phosphorus discharge standards by December 2026.

The £12m project at Warton Sewage Treatment Works will increase treatment capacity to accommodate future population growth. Works include new storm balancing infrastructure, activated sludge plant upgrades, sludge treatment improvements and new final settlement assets.

Meanwhile, the largest contract, worth approximately £27m, will see Kier upgrade Worksop Sewage Treatment Works. The scheme includes improvements to pumping stations, activated sludge treatment processes, final settlement infrastructure and wider site enhancements.

The Worksop project follows an extended period of early contractor involvement between Kier and Severn Trent, with both teams working collaboratively during the pre-construction phase to develop the design and improve constructability.

The latest awards strengthen Kier’s position within the UK water sector, where the contractor currently supports nine major water companies and is delivering more than 130 live water and wastewater infrastructure projects nationwide.
