Caledonian Maritime Assets Limited (CMAL) has appointed McLaughlin & Harvey to deliver the £107m redevelopment of Port Ellen Ferry Terminal and its associated marshalling infrastructure on Islay.
The major upgrade will transform the existing harbour into a modern, resilient transport hub capable of supporting both current and future ferry operations.
The scheme includes significant land reclamation works to create expanded marshalling and laydown areas for cars and commercial vehicles, alongside improved traffic management routes across the port.
A new ferry berth will be constructed to accommodate both existing vessels and the incoming Islay-class ferries. Marine works will include dredging, fendering and installation of new bollards. The project will also deliver a new linkspan, fixed ramp, shore power infrastructure and an upgraded terminal building designed to enhance passenger and staff experience.
Further improvements include a new extended fishing berth and a significantly enlarged commercial quay—approximately four times the length of the current structure—with segregated offloading areas to improve safety and operational efficiency.
Sustainability features will also be incorporated, including electric vehicle charging points, cycle facilities, and upgraded lighting, CCTV and security infrastructure.
Construction is scheduled to begin in June 2026, following the completion of the Fèis Ìle festival, with completion targeted for 2029.
The project forms part of a wider programme of investment in Scotland’s ferry infrastructure and has been developed in consultation with local residents and businesses since 2022. The upgraded facilities will support increased passenger numbers and traffic capacity, strengthening connectivity for the island.
