Construction starts on £50m Army facilities programme in Wiltshire

Construction has started on new and upgraded Army facilities at Tidworth and Warminster as part of a £50m investment by the Ministry of Defence.

The programme includes around £13m of works at Assaye Barracks in Tidworth and approximately £37m at Battlesbury Barracks in Warminster.

Delivered through the Ministry of Defence’s Defence Estate Optimisation Portfolio, the projects will support 1 Medical Regiment, 2nd Battalion The Royal Yorkshire Regiment and The Royal Lancers.

At Assaye Barracks, legacy buildings have been demolished and work is now underway on a new Regimental Headquarters for 1 Medical Regiment. The move will release existing office and operational space for The Royal Lancers, who are due to relocate from Catterick to Tidworth from 2027.

New storage facilities for The Royal Lancers have already been completed ahead of their arrival.

At Battlesbury Barracks, facilities are being modernised for 2nd Battalion The Royal Yorkshire Regiment, which has relocated from Chester to Warminster.

The works include a new Officers’ Mess, Quartermaster facilities and an extension to the existing gym. Refurbishment of the Regimental Headquarters has already been completed.

The projects are being delivered with Aspire Defence and are expected to complete by early 2028.
