AtkinsRéalis has been awarded a £98.5m contract by Network Rail to upgrade signalling and telecommunications infrastructure across the Wessex route.

The three-year programme will be delivered through an integrated project team between Network Rail and AtkinsRéalis, covering 43 kilometres of railway and 11 stations in the Portsmouth area.

The scheme is designed to enhance network performance, improving reliability for both passenger and freight services operating across the region. The Wessex route plays a key role in connecting London with major southern hubs including Portsmouth and Southampton.

The project forms part of a wider £2bn investment programme by Network Rail and South Western Railway to modernise rail infrastructure across the South West and into London between 2024 and 2029.

AtkinsRéalis will bring specialist expertise in both conventional and digital signalling systems, supporting the delivery of complex rail upgrades while working closely with the wider supply chain, including SMEs.

The programme represents a significant investment in the region’s rail network, aimed at improving service reliability and supporting long-term growth for communities and businesses.
