Morgan Sindall Construction has submitted plans to refurbish the Crystal Palace National Sports Centre, as part of a major redevelopment aimed at modernising the historic sports facility.
The proposals have been submitted to London Borough of Bromley and cover the 15-hectare site within Crystal Palace Park, which originally opened in 1964.
The project, valued at around £100 million, will upgrade facilities while preserving key historic elements of the Grade II-listed complex*. Morgan Sindall was appointed last year by the Greater London Authority through the Southern Construction Framework to deliver the redevelopment.
Major Upgrades Planned
The scheme will include significant improvements across the sports complex, including:
Structural alterations to restore the 50-metre competition pool and diving pool
Upgraded changing facilities
A refurbished façade to improve energy efficiency
New lifts and accessibility improvements
Public realm upgrades to strengthen pedestrian links to nearby transport connections
Further improvements across the site include modernised indoor sports areas, a larger gym and improved facilities for sports clubs.
The redevelopment will also introduce new outdoor sports facilities including:
A six-court padel centre
3x3 basketball courts
Five-a-side football pitches
A full-size artificial multi-sports pitch
Sustainable Design Features
The project is designed to significantly reduce the centre’s environmental impact. Plans include removing gas systems and introducing low-carbon technologies, such as air source heat pumps and rooftop solar panels.
Project Timeline
Morgan Sindall will now progress through a pre-construction phase while planning and listed building approvals are finalised.
If approved, major construction works are expected to begin in 2026, with completion targeted for 2028.
