The UK Government is exploring potential names for a new wave of large-scale housing developments, as part of its wider plan to deliver 1.5 million new homes during the current parliament.
According to reports, proposed names under consideration include:
Elizabethtown – in honour of Queen Elizabeth II
Pankhurst – after suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst
Attleeton – referencing former Prime Minister Clement Attlee
Athelstan – widely regarded as the first King of England
Seacole – after pioneering nurse Mary Seacole
A New Approach to Housing Delivery
The proposed new towns form a key part of the Government’s strategy to address the UK’s housing shortage, with a focus on large, masterplanned communities rather than piecemeal development.
Housing Secretary Steve Reed said the initiative represents a shift in how communities are delivered:
“People want real change – homes they can afford, local infrastructure that works, and good jobs in thriving communities.”
He added that the developments will be designed “from the ground up”, integrating:
🏘️ Housing
🚆 Transport links
🌳 Green spaces
💼 Employment opportunities
Industry Implications
For the construction sector, the programme signals:
📈 Significant long-term pipeline of work
🏗️ Opportunities across housing, infrastructure, and public realm
🤝 Increased collaboration across developers, contractors, and supply chains
If delivered at scale, the new towns initiative could become one of the largest construction programmes in the UK in decades.
