Costain has been appointed by Severn Trent to deliver a major upgrade at the Rugby Newbold Sewage Treatment Works, strengthening capacity and resilience at the site.
Acting as both principal contractor and principal designer, Costain will design and construct a new activated sludge plant, a biological treatment system that uses microorganisms to break down organic waste in sewage.
Boosting Capacity and Resilience
The upgrade will increase the site’s treatment capacity by 28%, from 21,600 m³/day to 27,598 m³/day, helping the facility meet future demand and regulatory requirements.
The improvements are designed to align with AMP8 WINEP regulations, ensuring the site can handle higher volumes of dry weather flow and operate more effectively during periods of changing weather conditions.
Scope of Works
The £45 million programme includes:
Construction of a new activated sludge plant
Four final settlement tanks (29m diameter each)
New pumping stations
A chemical dosing plant
Expansion and upgrade of inlet works
Increased feed and storm capacity
Enhancements to existing utilities and infrastructure
The project will be delivered in close collaboration with Severn Trent to minimise operational risks during construction.
Driving Efficiency Through Modern Methods
Costain will utilise its Production Thinking approach, incorporating:
Off-site manufacturing (OSM)
Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA)
Advanced construction technologies
These methods aim to improve safety, reduce programme time and maximise efficiency across the build.
The project is scheduled to run through to 2028.
