Construction work has officially begun on a £34.7 million upgrade of the B714 in North Ayrshire, marking a major infrastructure investment aimed at improving regional connectivity and road safety.
The scheme is being delivered by North Ayrshire Council with construction carried out by Wills Bros Civil Engineering.
The project represents a significant upgrade to a key transport corridor linking the Three Towns area with the Garnock Valley, while strengthening connections to Glasgow and the wider central belt.
Project Value and Funding
The overall project value is £34.7 million, with £23.69 million provided by the UK Government and the remaining funding delivered by North Ayrshire Council.
The investment is designed to improve traffic flow, reduce journey times and create a more reliable transport route for residents, businesses and commuters across the region.
Scope of Works
The first phase of the B714 upgrade will involve improvements to a 3.5km stretch of road between Girthill Farm and Kilwinning Road.
Key elements of the works include:
Localised realignment of sections of the existing road
Construction of a new 500-metre westbound overtaking lane
Delivery of environmental improvements along the route
New roundabout infrastructure connecting to Kilwinning Road
The B714 provides an important link between the A78 Sharphill Roundabout and the A737, helping traffic move between North Ayrshire communities and the wider Scottish road network.
Programme and Delivery
Construction began in March 2026 following approval of the council’s Full Business Case for the project.
Works are currently expected to be completed by winter 2027.
Future phases of the scheme may extend the upgrade further towards the A78 Sharphill Roundabout, subject to additional funding approvals.
Once complete, the project is expected to deliver long-term improvements in road safety, journey reliability and regional accessibility across North Ayrshire.
