Ten major contractors have been selected to support delivery of the Government’s first wave of projects under the £14bn New Hospital Programme.
The schemes form part of the wider NHS estate investment strategy and will focus heavily on rebuilding ageing hospital infrastructure, particularly facilities impacted by reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC).
Skanska emerged as one of the standout firms after securing roles on both the James Paget Hospital redevelopment in Great Yarmouth and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital scheme in King’s Lynn.
The first wave includes seven RAAC-affected hospitals that were prioritised following safety assessments across the NHS estate. All seven schemes are expected to be rebuilt using the Government’s standardised Hospital 2.0 delivery model, aimed at improving efficiency and accelerating project delivery.
The wider contractor line-up includes:
Graham – Airedale General Hospital
Sacyr UK – Frimley Park Hospital
Kier – Hinchingbrooke Hospital
Integrated Health Projects – Leighton Hospital
Dragados – West Suffolk Hospital
Laing O’Rourke – Hillingdon Hospital
Morgan Sindall – Milton Keynes University Hospital
Bovis – North Manchester General Hospital
Willmott Dixon – Women and Children’s Hospital, Cornwall
Formal contracts are expected to be signed later this year, with construction activity anticipated to begin across 2027 and 2028.
The programme is expected to generate significant opportunities across the healthcare construction supply chain as schemes move into pre-construction and delivery phases.
