Construction is now underway on a major new education facility in East London, as contractor GRAHAM begins work on the University of East London’s £45 million New Academic Building at its Stratford Health Campus.

Marking a key milestone for both the university and the wider region, the project will deliver a state-of-the-art teaching, learning and research hub, designed to support the next generation of healthcare professionals.

A groundbreaking ceremony took place on 18 March, officially signalling the start of works on the Water Lane site.

Driving Healthcare Education Forward

Once complete in July 2027, the new facility will feature:

  • Advanced clinical skills centres

  • A prototype University Primary Care facility

  • Modern teaching and research spaces

The building is set to become a central hub for healthcare courses, helping expand access to education while supporting the growing demand for skilled professionals across the NHS and wider health sector.

Investment in People and Community

Beyond the physical build, the project brings a strong focus on social value and local impact.

Throughout construction, GRAHAM will:

  • Create jobs and apprenticeships

  • Deliver training and education initiatives

  • Partner with local schools and communities

  • Engage regional subcontractors and suppliers

With a commitment to working with businesses in Newham and within a 40-mile radius, the scheme is expected to provide a meaningful boost to the local economy and supply chain.

Part of a Wider £170m Vision

The development forms part of a broader £170 million investment programme by the University of East London, aimed at expanding academic facilities and student accommodation across its campuses.

This long-term strategy reflects a clear ambition: to strengthen healthcare education and provide the infrastructure needed to meet future workforce demands.

Sustainability at the Core

Sustainability is also a key priority, with the building targeting BREEAM Outstanding certification — placing it among the most environmentally responsible university buildings in the UK.

A Landmark Project for East London

With construction now in motion, the Stratford Health Campus development represents more than just a new building.

It’s a project that combines education, community impact, sustainability, and long-term investment — reinforcing the role of construction in shaping future generations and supporting critical public services.
