Flagship £500m University of Bristol Temple Quarter campus complete ahead of September opening

The University of Bristol’s £500m Temple Quarter Enterprise Campus has reached full completion, marking a major milestone in one of the UK’s largest regeneration projects.

Located next to Bristol Temple Meads station, the new campus will open to students in September and is set to accommodate around 4,600 students, 650 staff, and a dedicated hub for start-ups and innovation-led businesses.

The campus forms a key part of the wider 135-hectare Bristol Temple Quarter regeneration scheme, which is currently regarded as the largest urban regeneration project in the UK.

The university acquired the site from Bristol City Council in 2017, with the former Royal Mail sorting office demolished in 2019 to enable construction of the new development.

Over the coming months, furniture and specialist equipment will be installed ahead of the campus opening later this year.

The new development includes a six-storey atrium, a publicly accessible ground-floor Exchange Hall, internal landscaped gardens, and a 300-seat circular lecture theatre designed to encourage participation and collaboration.

The campus also benefits from improved public realm infrastructure, including a new University Square providing an eastern entrance to Temple Meads station, alongside a new harbour walkway funded by the West of England Mayoral Combined Authority.

The walkway will connect University Square to Temple Quay, enhancing pedestrian and cycle connectivity across the area.

More than half of the construction workforce was sourced from the local region, supporting regional employment throughout the delivery phase.

University of Bristol Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Judith Squires described the completion as a “major milestone” in the university’s ambition to create a connected, innovation-led city campus.

Mayor of the West of England Helen Godwin said the development represents a key step in unlocking the wider potential of Bristol Temple Quarter, supporting future job creation and housing delivery across the region.
