Construction has officially begun on a major new dry dock facility at the Port of Tilbury, marking a significant investment in the future of river transport on the Thames and a major boost for the local economy.

Uber Boat by Thames Clippers has broken ground on the state-of-the-art, purpose-built facility, which is being delivered by Southbay Civil Engineering. The development will transform how the operator maintains its 24-vessel fleet while creating long-term economic and employment opportunities across Tilbury and Thurrock.

A ground-breaking ceremony brought together key stakeholders, local leaders and project partners to celebrate the milestone, with phase one expected to be operational by the end of 2026 and full completion in early 2027.

The new facility will significantly improve operational efficiency, with the capacity to accommodate up to five vessels on land and two in the water at the same time. At the centre of the scheme is a dedicated travel hoist, allowing vessels to be lifted safely in all weather conditions—removing the current reliance on cranes, which are limited during high winds.

Beyond infrastructure, the project is set to deliver real social value. The development is already supporting apprenticeships, vocational training and partnerships with local education providers, helping to build a skilled workforce for the future of the UK’s maritime sector.

Southbay Civil Engineering has also committed to engaging regional supply chains, ensuring the investment filters directly into the local economy through job creation and subcontract opportunities.

This latest investment reinforces Tilbury’s growing importance within London’s transport network, positioning it as a key hub for river-based passenger and freight operations for years to come.
