BSN Group appointed to restore historic Grade II Market Street buildings in Tamworth

Tamworth Borough Council has appointed BSN Group Construction to deliver the restoration of three Grade II listed buildings on Market Street as part of the town’s ongoing Future High Streets Fund regeneration programme.

The properties — 26a, 27 and 27a Market Street — sit within the historic town centre near Tamworth Castle and will undergo a full conservation-led refurbishment following detailed investigative work which confirmed the need for specialist heritage expertise.

The works include structural repairs to make the buildings watertight and safe, re-roofing, façade restoration, and internal upgrades to meet current fire safety standards.

Ground floors will be refurbished for town centre uses which could include retail or artisan businesses, while a new compliant stair tower will replace the existing unsafe structure.

All restoration work will be both responsible and sympathetic to the historic character of the buildings.

BSN Group, which has delivered heritage and conservation projects for organisations including the National Trust and Historic England, has been appointed due to the complexity and sensitivity of the restoration required.

Work on site have started as of spring 2026, scaffolding is currently being erected.

The project will bring the buildings back into active use through a programme of structural repairs, including roof replacement, façade restoration, internal upgrades and fire safety improvements. Ground floors are expected to be repurposed for town centre uses such as retail or artisan businesses, supporting wider footfall and economic activity in the area.

A new compliant stair tower will also replace existing unsafe structures as part of the redevelopment.

Councillor Carol Dean, leader of Tamworth Borough Council, said the appointment marks an important final stage in the wider town centre regeneration programme, highlighting the importance of restoring historic assets and strengthening the long-term identity of the town centre.

Darren Perry, Joint Managing Director and Founder of BSN Group, said the project represents an opportunity to combine heritage conservation with traditional craftsmanship to bring the historic Market Street properties back into use for the community.

The Market Street scheme forms part of Tamworth Borough Council’s £21m Future High Streets Fund programme, which has already delivered multiple regeneration projects across the town centre including Town Hall Place, St Editha’s Square improvements and the redevelopment of the former Co-op building.

Once complete, the Market Street restoration will mark the final stage of the wider regeneration programme, which together with the new South Staffordshire College campus represents over £40m of investment in Tamworth town centre.

The council has confirmed the town centre will remain open throughout the works, with businesses continuing to operate as normal during construction.
