Manchester based civil engineering specialists PL Infrastructure has delivered full infrastructure packages simultaneously across three data centre projects and is on site at a fourth as the company emerges as one of the UK’s most in demand civils contractors in the sector.
With active schemes across the North West and more being tendered for, PL Infrastructure has delivered acombined programme of works valued at £9 million, reinforcing a track record in data centre civils that stretches back over several years and continues to grow.
PL Infrastructure has been at the start of the data centre rise in the UK, delivering several schemes across the country. Today, its regional portfolio spans three operationally distinct sites in this sector.
LBL Wirral: At Bromborough on the Wirral, the team delivered new cooling plant infrastructure within a high-security live facility. As part of our approach to ensure operations continue, PL worked closely with asset owners to ensure unobstructed operation of the facility to ensure business as usual.
Daresbury Laboratories in Warrington: Full civil engineering package at the £30 million supercomputer facility forming part of the Hartree Centre’s £210 million National Centre for Digital Innovation. Working for Russell WBHO over 26 weeks, the team completed earthworks, foundations, roads, drainage and ducting across the 6.2-acre site.
MCR2 Wythenshaw: Delivery of the full groundworks package at the state-of-the-art Wythenshawe data centre accommodating 1,200 racks across over 50,000 sq ft of technical space. Working for Keysource over
12 weeks, scope covered excavation, foundations, drainage, floor slabs, substation bases, specialist ductwork and hard landscaping.
A fourth data centre in Farnborough is under construction with PL right at the heart of it.
This scheme represents PL’s growing national reach with the team on site at the high-security new-build data site with an order for the delivery of all substructures, infrastructure, public realm, floor slabs, substation bases and service diversions.

Paul Lackey, Owner and Managing Director of PL
Infrastructure, said: “Data centres are one of the most demanding environments a civils contractor can work in. However, it’s a challenge we relish.”
“We have built our capability in this sector deliberately and progressively, and what we have across these three sites right now are teams that know how to deliver in conditions that would stop other contractors in their tracks.
“At PL, we move with pace, with certainty and done safely. Our clients trust us to deliver to the highest standards - and that’s exactly what we do.”
“These are complex jobs but ones we are very familiar with in the data centre sector. The projects we have in various places is where we demonstrate what we have already become. And now we are ready to take on more.”
