O’Brien Contractors begins work on Biogen renewable energy upgrade

Construction is now underway on a major renewable energy project at Biogen’s Westwood facility, where O’Brien Contractors has started enabling works to support the conversion of an existing anaerobic digestion plant into a Gas-to-Grid facility.

The project will allow renewable biomethane produced from organic waste to be injected directly into the UK’s national gas network, supporting the country’s transition towards lower-carbon energy infrastructure.

Over the next 25 weeks, O’Brien Contractors will deliver a package of civil engineering works including earthworks, reinforced concrete equipment bases, bund walls, concrete yards and new access roads to support the upgraded facility.

The Gas-to-Grid conversion represents another step forward for the UK’s growing renewable energy sector, helping maximise the value of existing anaerobic digestion assets while increasing the production of low-carbon gas.

As work progresses, the scheme is expected to generate opportunities across civil engineering, concrete construction, utilities, specialist mechanical installation and the wider renewable energy supply chain.
