GRAHAM appointed to deliver Clifton Hampden Bypass scheme

Oxfordshire County Council has appointed GRAHAM to deliver the Clifton Hampden Bypass, marking a key milestone in the wider Didcot infrastructure programme.

The scheme forms part of the Didcot and surrounding areas major infrastructure (HIF1) project, designed to unlock growth, improve connectivity and reduce congestion across the region.

🚧 Transforming a key transport route

The new bypass will re-route traffic away from Clifton Hampden village, where the busy A415 currently runs through the centre, causing congestion and safety concerns.

The works include:

  • construction of a new single carriageway road

  • segregated walking and cycling routes

  • a new roundabout linking to Culham Science Centre and Culham railway station

  • new junctions connecting to the existing A415 and surrounding road network

Once complete, the scheme will significantly improve journey times and reduce traffic through the village.

📊 Supporting growth and connectivity

The bypass is part of a wider infrastructure push to:

  • unlock new housing and employment sites

  • support improved public transport, including bus services

  • enhance active travel routes

  • drive long-term economic growth in the Didcot area

The project is backed by funding from Homes England through the Housing Infrastructure Fund.

🏗️ What’s next

Enabling works are already underway, including:

  • site clearance

  • archaeological investigations

  • utility diversions

Main construction is expected to begin in spring, with delivery set to take around two years.

🧠 What this means

This is a major regional infrastructure scheme that will generate opportunities across:

  • highways and civils

  • drainage and earthworks

  • utilities and services

  • surfacing and road infrastructure

  • supply chain and subcontract packages
