Esh Construction has completed the £6.4 million redevelopment of Bishop Auckland Bus Station on behalf of Durham County Council.
The new transport hub has officially opened to the public following completion of the main station works and a wider £1.8 million enabling works package delivered as part of ongoing regeneration activity within the town centre.
Constructed on the site of the former Saddler Street facility, the development provides a modern, fully accessible transport interchange designed to improve connectivity and support wider regeneration ambitions across Bishop Auckland.
The completed scheme includes:
Live passenger information systems
CCTV and modern waiting facilities
Accessible toilets and changing places unit
Retail kiosk
Landscaped public realm improvements
EV charging points and cycle parking
124-space car park
The station also incorporates a range of sustainability measures including rooftop solar PV panels, rainwater harvesting systems and a Sedum green roof designed to support biodiversity.
More than 120 steel girders were installed during construction, fabricated locally by South Durham Structures Ltd.
According to the project team, the development has generated £2.2 million in social value through local supply chain spend, education engagement and employment initiatives across County Durham.
The project forms part of the wider Future High Streets Fund regeneration programme aimed at improving infrastructure, accessibility and town centre vitality within Bishop Auckland.
